Injury recovery and prevention of the lower limb can be achieved by increasing ankle stability and flexibility.  Studies have shown that individuals with increased stability and flexibility will have increased balance as well. Two tests that are widely used for assessing balance of the ankle and lower limb include the Y Balance Test and the Star Excursion Balance Test. Below we have put together videos with step by step instructions on how to assess your lower limb balance and get you on track to optimal ankle stability!

Star Excursion Balance Test

  • Maintain a stable core and neutral spine
  • Keep your knee from tracking over your toes throughout the movement
  • Make sure to lightly tap foot when reaching for tape
  • Keep your weight on the stance leg
  • Maintain a single leg balance throughout the exercise
  • Reach as far as you can for the most accurate balance reading
  • Repeat with the opposite leg going in the reverse direction

Y Balance Test

  • Maintain a stable core and neutral spine
  • Keep your knee from tracking over your toes throughout the movement
  • Slide your foot along the tape as far as you can go for the most accurate balance reading
  • Keep your weight on the stance leg
  • Repeat with the opposite leg
